Our story
Kwe, Hello, and welcome to Kitiganik School. Our community of Kitiganik/Rapid Lake is located in the heart of Algonquin territory, approximately 300 kilometres north of Ottawa. Though small in size—just 59 acres—our community is rich in culture, language, and land-based knowledge.
Kitiganik School serves students from Grade 1 to Secondary 2, with 92 students currently enrolled. In 2025, the school underwent major renovations, including a new Special Education wing designed to better support diverse learning needs and create more inclusive spaces for all students.
We are proud of our school, our learners, and the strong cultural foundation that guides everything we do.
Our history
The Kitiganik School has stood for more than 50 years, serving generations of students in the heart of of the Algonquin Anicinabe Territory. Over the decades, the building went through several small renovations and facelifts. However, many unforseen structural problems continued to surface- including issues with mold, sewer leakage, and aging infustracture. Each time a problem appeared, the school underwent yet another round of repairs.
Despite these challenges, one thing never changed:
the dedication of the staff and the determination of the community to keep teaching, learning, and supporting our children.
In 2025, the school finally received major renovations, along with a new Special Education addition, creating safer, healthier, and more welcoming spaces for all students.
Today, Kitiganik School continues to play a vital role in our living history. It is a place where students grow with pride — pride in who they are, where they come from, and the strength of the community that stands behind them.
